Need to make sure your car donation counts for this tax year? With Valor Wheels in Albuquerque, it’s simple: complete a quick 2-minute form or call us, schedule your free pickup, and as long as a licensed tow truck picks up your vehicle on or before December 31, the IRS treats that pickup date as your donation date. You’ll receive a written acknowledgment and, when required, IRS Form 1098-C within 30 days of the sale so you can claim your deduction when you file.

We coordinate vehicle donations in partnership with Heritage for the Blind, a real 501(c)(3) whose EIN is 58-2164446. We serve the entire Albuquerque Metro—From the Westside, Rio Rancho, and Corrales to Nob Hill, the Heights, Downtown, North Valley, South Valley, and beyond. Your car does not need to run, pass inspection, or have current registration. Tow is always free, usually same-day or next business day in most metro areas. December pickup slots fill up fast across Albuquerque, so if you’re ready, start the form or call now and lock in your year-end tax benefit.

Your year-end donation timeline

1

Start the 2-minute donation form or call Valor Wheels

2 minutes

Provide your contact info, basic vehicle details, and your Albuquerque Metro pickup location—whether you’re in Rio Rancho, the Westside, or the Northeast Heights. Prefer the phone? Call and give the same info in just a couple of minutes so we can move straight to scheduling.

2

Get a quick call back to lock in your pickup date

Within 1–2 business hours (weekdays)

A Heritage for the Blind donation coordinator calls you back within about 1–2 business hours on weekdays to confirm details and offer the earliest available free tow. You pick a time window that works, aiming for on or before Dec 31 to secure this year’s deduction.

3

Free licensed tow truck arrives for your vehicle

Same-day or next business day in most metro areas

In the Albuquerque Metro, most cars can be towed the same day or the next business day after scheduling, Monday through Saturday. The truck meets you at your home, office, or apartment—Downtown, Uptown, South Valley, North Valley, or nearby suburbs—at the agreed time window.

4

Sign your title at pickup to complete the donation

5–10 minutes at the truck

At pickup, you sign your New Mexico title over to Heritage for the Blind as directed. The driver will guide you through exactly where to sign. The moment the vehicle is picked up on Dec 31 or earlier is your official IRS donation date, even though the sale happens later.

5

Vehicle is sold and tax paperwork is mailed to you

Within 30 days of sale

Your vehicle is transported, processed, and sold. Within 30 days after the sale, you’ll receive a written acknowledgment and, when required, IRS Form 1098-C by mail. You then use that documentation to claim your deduction on Schedule A when you file your federal tax return.

Year-end tax deduction facts

Your donation date is the pickup date

For IRS purposes, the donation date is when Heritage for the Blind takes possession of your vehicle—when the tow truck picks it up—not when it’s sold. A pickup on or before Dec 31 counts toward this tax year.

Form 1098-C for larger deductions

If your vehicle sells for more than the IRS threshold, you’ll receive Form 1098-C. It shows the gross proceeds from the sale. You use this form to support your charitable vehicle-donation deduction when you file your return.

Deduction generally equals sale price

In most cases, your allowable federal deduction is the actual sale price of the vehicle, not a price guide value. Heritage for the Blind sells your car and reports that amount on your acknowledgment or Form 1098-C.

30-day written acknowledgment rule

After your vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind mails you a written acknowledgment (and Form 1098-C when needed) within 30 days of the sale. Keep this with your tax records as proof of your charitable contribution.

Itemizing on Schedule A

To benefit from a federal tax deduction for your car donation, you must itemize deductions on Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. Consult your tax preparer to confirm what’s best for your situation.

FAQ

If my car is picked up on December 31 in Albuquerque, does it count for this tax year?
Yes. For IRS purposes, your donation date is when Heritage for the Blind takes possession of the vehicle. As long as the tow truck picks up your car on or before December 31—anywhere in the Albuquerque Metro—that donation is treated as made in this tax year, even if the vehicle is sold later.
How late in December can I start the process and still make the deadline?
Because December pickup slots fill quickly in Albuquerque, it’s wise to start as early in the month as possible. However, you can still try in the last week: complete the form or call, answer the callback, and schedule the earliest available pickup. If we can get a tow to you by Dec 31, your deduction counts for this tax year.
My car doesn’t run and the registration is expired. Can I still donate?
Yes. Your vehicle does not need to run, pass inspection, or have current registration to be accepted in most cases. Just let us know its condition when you complete the form or call. We provide free towing throughout Albuquerque and surrounding areas, even for non-running or parked vehicles, as long as they’re reasonably accessible.
What documents do I need ready at pickup in New Mexico?
You’ll need your New Mexico vehicle title and a valid ID. At pickup, you sign the title over to Heritage for the Blind as instructed by the coordinator or the tow driver. If you have questions about your title status (lost, lien, name change), mention that during the scheduling call so we can review your options before dispatching a truck.
When will I receive my tax receipt or IRS Form 1098-C?
After your car is picked up, it’s processed and sold. Within 30 days of the sale, Heritage for the Blind mails you a written acknowledgment and, when required, IRS Form 1098-C. Keep this paperwork with your tax files; you’ll need it when you or your preparer completes your federal return and Schedule A.
How much can I deduct for my Valor Wheels car donation?
In most cases, the amount you can deduct is based on the actual sale price of your vehicle as reported by Heritage for the Blind, not a Kelley Blue Book estimate. You’ll see that figure on your acknowledgment or Form 1098-C. The actual tax savings depend on your individual tax situation, so it’s best to check with a tax professional.
Is towing really free in the Albuquerque Metro and beyond?
Yes. There is no charge to you for pickup anywhere in the Albuquerque Metro—whether you’re in Rio Rancho, Los Lunas, Bernalillo, the Heights, or Downtown—or in other participating areas nationwide. The tow company bills the charity, not you. Your entire vehicle donation goes to benefit Heritage for the Blind’s programs for people who are blind or visually impaired.
